Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya

Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya is internationally recognized as one of the foremost innovators in Indian classical music and the pioneer of the Indian classical slide guitar. A Grammy-nominated artist, BBC World Music Award recipient, and the first inductee into the World Music Lifetime Hall of Fame, he has spent over four decades expanding the artistic possibilities of the guitar within the framework of Hindustani classical music.

Born into a musical family in Kolkata, Debashish Bhattacharya began performing at an early age and developed a unique musical voice that seamlessly combines deep traditional knowledge with groundbreaking innovation. His contributions extend beyond performance; he is the inventor of several instruments, including the Chaturangui, Gandharvi, and Anandi, collectively known as the “Debtaar” family of instruments. These creations have established an entirely new sonic vocabulary within Indian classical music.

Throughout his distinguished career, he has performed at major concert halls and festivals around the world and collaborated with celebrated artists including John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain, and Mandolin U Srinivas. His music is widely admired for its lyrical beauty, spiritual depth, technical brilliance, and ability to connect audiences across cultures.

Suryadipta Bhattacharya represents the next generation of this remarkable musical lineage. Trained from an early age under the guidance of his father and guru, Pandit Debashish Bhattacharya, he has developed into a sensitive and accomplished musician in his own right.

Deeply rooted in the traditions of Hindustani classical music while embracing contemporary artistic perspectives, Suryadipta brings freshness, precision, and musical maturity to the stage. His close understanding of Pandit Ji's musical language allows for an exceptionally intuitive and refined artistic dialogue, making their performances both seamless and compelling.
